This is a common issue with Windows Vista and Windows 7 due to a driver conflict of sorts. The following will fix the problem, though may need to be repeated if the issue reoccurs.
- To fix the issue, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the modem following the instructions below:
- Make sure the modem is directly connected into the USB port on the computer or laptop.
- Click on the Start menu and go to Control Panel -> Phone and Modem
Note: If you cannot locate Phone and Modem, you will have to switch to Classic View.
For Windows 7 you will see a little icon right above the icons that reads “View By: Category”. This needs to be switched to Small Icons.
For Windows Vista, on the left side you will see a link that should say “Switch to Classic View” click on that to display Phone and Modem.
- Under Phone and Modem options, click on the Modems tab and it should list all of the available modems. Remove all installed modems as they could be causing an issue with the USB modem. Remove the USB modem from the list as well.
- Once the modem is removed from the list, disconnect the modem from the USB port on the computer and reboot the computer.
- Wait until the computer is completely rebooted and your desktop is displayed. You can then connect the modem back into the USB port.
You may see some on screen prompts informing you the modem is being installed. When that is finished (1-2 minutes) go back to Phone and Modem options. Go back to the Modems tab and verify the USB modem is listed.
- If the modem was listed in the previous step, you can test it out by trying to dial your Internet connection OR send a fax. This all depends on what you are using the modem for.
If the modem works at this point, you are all set, but as stated previously, the same issue may occur again.
