Model 4401: How do I set up the Zoom AP+4 as a repeater?

This answer describes how to configure the AP+4 as a Universal Repeater to extend the range of an existing wireless network. In Universal Repeater mode the AP+4 will link to one other wireless router or access point, whether or not that device supports WDS (Wireless Distribution System).

Before proceeding, make sure you know the SSID (network name), wireless channel, encryption method, and security key or passphrase of the wireless device you want to extend the range of.

The Zoom AP+4 must be configured from a wired computer. Connect a computer into one of the AP+4’s numbered LAN ports using an Ethernet cable. Make sure both the computer and AP+4 are turned OFF at this time. Then follow the steps below.

1. Turn on the AP+4.
2. We recommend doing a factory reset on the AP+4 to clear any previous configuration. Refer to FAQ 979 for the proper reset procedure.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Open a web browser, enter http://10.0.0.200 in the address bar, and then press Enter (or Return) to open the AP+4 configuration manager.
5. The Status page appears first. In the left pane, select Setup Wizard.
6. On the Welcome page, click Next.
7. On the Choosing an Operating Mode page, select Router/AP, and then click Next.
8. On the Selecting a Time Zone page, click Next. (Note: It is not necessary to enable the settings on this page unless you want the AP+4’s clock automatically updated by an NTP time server.)
9. If the LAN Interface Setup page appears, you can accept the default settings for now and click Next.
10. On the Setting up Internet Access page, select DHCP Client from the WAN Acces Type drop-down menu, and then click Next.
11. On the Configuring the Wireless Network page, enter the following settings:

• Band: 2.4 GHz (B+G)
• Wireless Operation: AP
• SSID:  zoom_repeater (or enter a different SSID that you want to identify with the AP+4)
• Channel Number:  Select the channel of the wireless router or access point you want to extend the range of.
• Select Enable Universal Repeater Mode
• SSID of Extended Interface: Enter the SSID (network name) of the wireless router or access point you want to extend the range of.
• Click Next.

Your AP+4 is now configured as a Universal Repeater. To verify that the link is good, restart your computer or perform a release/renew operation and see if your computer obtains an IP address from the wireless router or access point. If it does not, try doing the following:

• Recheck the Wireless → Basic Settings and Security settings on the AP+4. (Note that since the AP+4’s LAN DHCP is set to DHCP client, you will need to configure your computer’s TCP/IP settings with a static IP address of 10.0.0.100 in order to re-access the AP+4 configuration manager. If you are not sure how to do this, refer to Appendix A in the AP+4 User Guide.)
• Check the DHCP server, LAN configuration, and MAC filtering settings on your wireless router or access point.
• Power off both the AP+4 and the wireless router or access point. Turn on the wireless router or access point and wait for its LEDs to settle, and then turn on the AP+4.

If there is a good connection, you can disconnect the AP+4 from the wired computer and move it to a desired location where you want to extend the range of your wireless network. If your laptop computer or other wireless client(s) cannot establish a connection to the zoom_repeater network, ensure that you have entered the wireless encryption key or passphrase correctly.
