Computer Name and Workgroup
To setup your computers in a Workgroup, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel
- Double-click the Network and Dial-up Connections icon
- Click the link for Network Identification
- Click the Properties button
- Assign each computer a meaningful name. The name will appear in the Network Neighborhood
- Enter a Workgroup name. Assign every computer to that Workgroup name
- Click OK
- Restart your computer.
Now you can configure the resources that you want to share.
Configuring File and Printer Sharing
To share resources such as Printers, Folders, and Files you will need to enable and configure File and Printer Sharing as follows;
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel
- Double-click the Network and Dial-up Connections icon
- Click the Properties button
- Click to select the check box for File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
- Click OK to close all the windows and insert the Windows 2000 CD if prompted to do so
- Restart your computer
Now you can view all the computers in your workgroup by using the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop.
Sharing Folders
After the restart, follow these steps to allow Folders and Files to be shared with other computers;
- Locate a folder on the computer
- Right-click the File, and then click Sharing
- Select Share this Folder
- Enter a share name. The folder appears under this name in Network Neighborhood
- Click OK
The shared folder icon will now appear with a hand. You can access the shared folder through the Network Neighborhood icon on your Desktop.
