Setting Up and Using ZoomTether

ZoomTether lets you plug your Android phone into a Zoom Model 4501, 4504, 4506AG, or 4506BG mobile broadband router so all your Wi-Fi® compatible devices can share your phone’s Internet connection.

Your phone needs to be running Android 2.2.x or later, up to 4.1 (4.2 or later not supported). You normally check this in Settings, in the About Phone area.

 

Here we tell you how to use ZoomTethering by following these easy steps:

 

1	If necessary, upgrade the firmware on your Zoom router to include support for ZoomTether.
2	Load the ZoomTether application into your phone from the Zoom router.
3	Use ZoomTether by plugging your phone into Zoom Model 4501, 4504, 4506AG, or 4506BG. Depending on your service, your provider may detect that you are tethering. If your service provider charges extra for tethering, additional service charges may apply.

Please see below for details about these 3 steps.

Step 1) If necessary, upgrade the firmware on your Zoom router to include support for ZoomTether.

First check your Firmware version:

1. Turn on your Zoom router and connect a computer or other device to it either wirelessly or via the Ethernet port

2. For Model 4501, 4506AG, or 4506BG: Open a web browser and type http://192.168.1.1 (the router’s default LAN IP address) in the address bar. Press Enter.

   For Model 4504: Open a web browser and type http://192.168.2.1 (the router’s default LAN IP address) in the address bar. Press Enter.

3. When the Status page appears, type admin in the System Password field at the top of the page, and then click Login.
4. Click the Advanced icon at the top of the page.
5. Click the Toolbox icon.
6. On the Toolbox page, in the left column, click Firmware Upgrade/Restore.
7. On the firmware upgrade page it will list the firmware that is on your Zoom Router. The name of the firmware should include the letters ZT. If the name doesn’t include these letters, you will need to upgrade your router’s firmware. If your firmware name includes ZT, please go to Step 2 below.

If you need to upgrade the Router’s firmware, here’s how:

1. Using an Internet connected computer, click here and follow the onscreen instructions to select the correct firmware from the web page and download it to your computer. It will ask you to put it in a folder, remember where you put it.
2. Connect your computer directly into the Zoom Router’s Ethernet port, and make sure the router is plugged into AC power. Do not attempt to carry out the firmware upgrade over a wireless connection or through another router or network device!

3. For Model 4501, 4506AG, or 4506BG: Open a web browser and type http://192.168.1.1 (the router’s default LAN IP address) in the address bar. Press Enter.

   For Model 4504: Open a web browser and type http://192.168.2.1 (the router’s default LAN IP address) in the address bar. Press Enter.

4. When the Status page appears, type admin in the System Password field at the top of the page, and then click Login.
5. Click the Advanced icon at the top of the page.
6. Click the Toolbox icon.
7. On the Toolbox page, in the left column, click Firmware Upgrade/Restore.
8. On the Firmware Upgrade/Restore page, click Browse.
9. On the Choose File dialog box, navigate to and select the upgrade file that you have downloaded from the Zoom Support site, and then click Open.
10. You will be returned to the Firmware Upgrade/Restore page. Click Upgrade.
11. The firmware upgrade will take about 90 seconds to load into the router, and then the router will restart automatically. Please wait about 2 minutes for this entire process to complete.
12. After the firmware update process is complete, you will need to perform a hard reset of the modem. First locate the reset button on the back or side of your router, and then use a paper clip or other small device to press down the button for at least 8 seconds. Wait for the router to reboot.

Step 2) Load the ZoomTether application into your phone for Android 2.2.x, 2.3.x, or 3.x. (If your phone is running Android 4.0.x or 4.1, go to Step 2A.)

1. Check that your Android phone is running Android 2.2.x, 2.3.x, or 3.x. You normally check in Settings, in the About Phone area.
2. Select Settings, and then select Applications. This brings you to a page called Application Settings or something similar. On that page click Unknown Sources to ON.
3. While still on the same page, select Development. On the Development page click USB Debugging ON and if your phone supports the function, click Stay Awake ON.
4. Now you need to connect your phone to the Zoom Router to download ZoomTether to your phone. The first time you connect your phone to the Router, it will automatically download the ZoomTether Application and place it in your Apps folder. After this is done, you can turn off the Unknown Sources button in Applications if you want to.

Step 2A) Load the ZoomTether application into your phone for Android 4.0.x or 4.1.

1. Check that your Android phone is running Android 4.0.x or 4.1. You normally check in Settings, in the About Phone area.
2. Select Settings, and then select Security. This brings you to a page called Security Settings or something similar. On that page click Unknown Sources to ON and return to the home page.
3. Select Settings and then select Developer Options. This will bring you to a page called Developer Options or something similar. On that page click USB Debugging to ON and if your phone supports the function, click Stay Awake to ON.
4. Now you need to connect your phone to the Zoom Router to download ZoomTether to your phone. The first time you connect your phone to the Router, it will automatically download the ZoomTether Application and place it in your Apps folder. After this is done, you can turn off the Unknown Sources button in Applications if you want to.

Step 3) Use ZoomTether.

1. Turn off your phone’s Wi-Fi to reduce power drain and minimize interference.
2. Connect your Android Phone to the Router with the phone’s USB Cable. For most Android phones, an icon for different USB modes should appear on the top of your phone screen. Select USB Storage, Disk Drive or PC mode. Any of these should work fine. DO NOT SELECT Tethering since this will not work.
3. Launch your phone’s ZoomTether App and select Service Active.
4. The status should change to Waiting for Connection. After about 30-45 seconds, the status should change to Connected to Host. Enjoy!

If you disconnect your phone from the Zoom Router and later want to use ZoomTether, simply repeat step 3.
